Description
L-Carnitine (levocarnitine) is a naturally occurring quaternary ammonium compound derived from lysine and methionine. It is the biologically active stereoisomer of carnitine.
In published biochemistry literature, L-carnitine is described as a substrate in the carnitine palmitoyltransferase shuttle, the system by which long-chain acyl groups are transferred across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This material is supplied as a characterized reference compound for non-clinical laboratory work, such as analytical method development, mass spectrometry and chromatography reference standards, acylcarnitine profiling, and in vitro enzyme assays.
